Rally held to protest killing of one-horned rhino

Chitwan, April 17

Conservationists and students took out a “mourning rally” today after a one-horned rhino was killed on April 7 in Sauraha, Chitwan.

Tying white scarfs on their heads, a huge number of protesters carried placards with slogans on poaching such as “Rhino’s horn is not a medicine”. The rally, which was jointly organised by 40 groups in Chitwan, converged into a meeting after the participants reached Gaindachowk.

A group of smugglers had killed a one-horned rhino in Jagatpur-based Hariyali Community Forest on April 7.   According to the 2015 census, there are as many as 605 one-horned rhinos in Chitwan National Park. Participants of the programme said the one-horned rhino, spotted tiger, among others, belonged to CNP.
