Four cities, including Kathmandu recorded the highest temperature this month in the last 15 years. The maximum temperature of 35 degree Celsius recorded in Kathmandu on June 1 is the highest in the Valley since 1979. On May 7, 1989, the mercury touched 36.6 degree Celsius in Kathmandu. Dipayal, Birendranagar and Dang also recorded new highs. On June 12, Dipayal recorded 44.2 degree Celsius. Dipayal had recorded a maximum temperature of 44 degree Celsius in 1995 and 1998. Birendranagar recorded 41.8 degree Celsius, 1.5 degree Celsius more than that recorded on June 1, 1998. On June 18, the maximum temperature recorded in Dang was 40.6 degree Celsius, 0.1 degree Celsius more than that recorded on June 7, 1998. “The delayed monsoon is causing the temperature to soar. If brief showers occur, the temperature will decrease,” said Mandira Rajbagh, senior meteorologist at the Department of Hydrology and Metrology. Monsoon is yet to break in Nepal. Another senior meteorologist said rains are expected in 2-3 days.
