Relief eludes kin of conflict victims
Rolpa, December 5:
Har Kumari Gharti, 31, from Katari VDC in Rolpa has been doing the rounds of District Administration Office since last week to get compensation announced for the families of those killed in a decade-long insurgency by the state and the Maoists.
Gharti alleged that the Nepal Army personnel killed her brother Karmadan Budha,19, accusing him of supporting the Maoists. Her mother was also allegedly killed by the soldiers the day they came looking for Budha.
She said, “My brother neither supported the Maoists nor criticised the army. He had just returned home from India. Army personnel shot him and my mother without trying to ascertain the facts.”
She said, “My father died when I was still a child. Now I don’t have anyone in my Maiti. On top of that, I have been denied the compensation.”
Similar is the case of Tuk Maan Budha, 63, of Sirpa VDC. His son was a Maoist and was killed by the army 10 years ago in Mijhing VDC. He complained that the state had not provided him the amount promised to the martyrs’ families.
Tek Man Rokka of Thawang VDC, whose eldest son Bhim Prasad Rokka was killed three
years ago in Khara, is also awaiting relief in Liwang-6, Rolpa.
Besides these three, a number of families of the insurgency victims are yet to receive the promised compensation.
Keshav Raj Acharya, Chief District Officer of Rolpa said they had been collecting the data on the families of those killed during insurgency and were not listed in the first list.
The government has already decided to provide Rs 1 lakh each to the families of those who died during the insurgency between February 13, 1996 to November 21, 2006.
Around 13,400 people were reportedly killed during the period.
