Rajbiraj, February 22

A 60-year-old woman, who was critically injured in an elephant attack, is fighting for life in a hospital in Saptari.

The woman was attacked by an elephant yesterday in Aginisair Krishnasabaran Rural Municipality, Saptari. Police said they had taken her to Rajbiraj-based Gajendra Narayan Singh Sagarmatha Zonal Hospital after she was rescued from the jungle.

Assistant health worker at the emergency ward of the hospital Jaya Krishna Gurmaita said the condition of the woman was very critical. He added that the identity of the woman was yet to be established.

According to the locals they had not seen the woman in the area before. “The woman has received a deep cut in her throat, chest, wrist and thigh, among other body parts,” said Dr Pramod Yadav, adding that the hospital had referred her to Dharan-based BP Koirala Institute of Health and Sciences for treatment, but no relative or family member of the woman had come to the hospital yet. Head constable Ram Shankar Yadav said they could not get the information from the woman as she was not in a condition to speak.

The hospital administration said it could not afford ambulance charges to take the woman to BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences.
