School sets up its own veggie garden
Khotang, June 11
In a bid to provide practical education to its students and promote a sense of respect towards agricultural occupations, Janata Lower Secondary School of Nerpa-8, Rampur, Khotang has started growing organic vegetables on its premises.
The school’s Principal Jham Prasad Acharya said various types of vegetables such as mushroom, cauliflower, tomato, chilli, and ginger among others are cultivated in four ropanis of land, including two ropanis rented from others. “As agriculture is a subject of study in the school, we decided to begin growing vegetables in the school,” he said.
The school has made over Rs 10,000 by selling the tomatoes it produced. “Besides selling vegetables, we also sell seeds and our returns are growing,” said the principal, adding, “While the project was conceived to add to the children’s education, it has also become a good source of income.”
According to the principal, the curriculum for the subject approved by the District Curriculum Coordination Centre was introduced and implemented for Grade VI, VII, and VIII.
Meanwhile, the locals are happy with this novel initiative of the school and hope the locally devised agriculture curriculum will help students become self-reliant through vegetable farming in future.
