BAJURA: Two persons were killed and another one injured after a house was swept away by rain-triggered landslide in Gaumul Rural Municipality-6 of Bajura district, on Thursday night.

The deceased have been identified as Niruta Chadara (30) and her daughter Kismati Chadar (6), and the injured as Jung Chadara (90), all the local residents of Basala.

According to Bajura District Police Office (DPO), the boulders and muds from above swept away the whole house belonging to Jung, killing Niruta and her daughter at around 1:00 am today.

Apparently, all the belongings including food grains and clothes in the house were destroyed in the disaster.

Bajura Chief District Officer (CDO) Ganga Prasad Neupane said that a team of police were deployed to the site to carry out the rescue operation.

The incessant rain has affected the lives of people in the district. At least 95 human settlements out of nine local levels in the district are under higher risk of landslides. Likewise, chances of landslides in the villages on slopes and hills are increasing.

People in the district have been living in fear as Bajura tops the list of districts under the risk of landslides, CDO Neupane said and added that Triveni Municipality, followed by Badimalika Municipality of the district, were at higher risk of landslides. Huge masses of landslide debris were continuously falling from above the human settlements in the district.

Bajura District Administration Office has issued alerts to locals of areas under the high-risk of landslides and directed them to take safety measures.

The current of Budhiganga River flowing between Budhiganga and Triveni Municipalities had increased with the torrential rain. At the same time, the landslide debris falling from beneath the Paima village into the river was likely to obstruct the river channel, in Kailashmandau area of Triveni-9, Ram Singh Rawal, the municipality mayor informed.

Although landslides have taken place throughout the year in the area since last year, the disaster rises to the extreme during monsoon.

Meanwhile, the rain-triggered landslides have obstructed various roads in the district.
