Poignant journey

KATHMANDU: A play that they have been staging for the last 18 years, two great Indian actors Shabana Azmi and Farooque Sheikh performed their famous play Tumhari Amrita, directed by Feroz Abbas Khan, based on the story written by Javed Siddiqui at The Kamalmani Theatre on September 16.

The play though on the surfacial level seems to be a simple love story with just letters exchanged between the two characters, as the play proceeds it remarkably takes the audience through the journey of a lifetime of these two characters — Amrita and Zulfi, the highs and lows of their lives, along with the political scenario and social setting during that time.

It also gives an insight into human feelings and how the way one looks at things change with the passage of time. Delving into human nature from innocent happiness, jealousy, selfishness, loneliness, a sense of abandonment, selflessness, acceptance and finally to death it flows beautifully.

The actors seated in chairs at a table with their letters in front of them but with their performance makes the audience burst into laughter at one instance and then take them on a heartrending scene in the other just with their dialogues and facial expressions. The short descriptions of the their life lets the audience sway their imagination and see these characters evolve from children to young adults to mature individuals and the situations they are in. The language used in the play adds an artistic flavour to it.

The proceeds from the stageing of the play will be used to support the patients of Spinal Injury Rehabilitation Centre in Kavre.
