KATHMANDU, OCTOBER 11
Tribhuvan Army Club fencer Rama Kumari Singh bagged women's Foil event gold medal in the ninth National Games in Pokhara today.
Singh edged past Nepal APF Club's Manisha Rai 15-14 in the final. APF duo Mandira Thapa and Anita Adhikari finished joint third.
In men's section, APF fencer Rajendra Gajurel claimed Sabre event gold medal with a 15-12 victory over TAC's Upendra Shahi. APF's Khem Khatri and TAC's Raghu Bir Chand finished joint third in the event. Likewise, Omkar Singh won second gold medal for Bagmati Province. Singh defeated TAC fencer Ram Thapa 15-14 in the Epee event final. TAC's Min Karki and Gandaki Province's Bijay Adhikari won bronze medals.
On the first day of the event, Shikshya Napit of Bagmati, Indira Poudel of TAC and Jalendra Shahi of Sudurpashchim Province won gold medals.
Cricket
Sudurpashchim Province defeated Gandaki by six wickets, while Nepal APF Club beat Bagmati by four wickets to register their first victories in women's cricket at the Pokhara Stadium.
In the day's first match, Bagmati posted 89-7 in their allotted 20 overs before APF overcame the target losing six wickets with four balls to spare. Roma Thapa top scored for APF with 22 runs, while Mamta Chaudhary scored 17 and skipper Sita Rana Magar contributed 16.
Nary Thapa (16) and Rajmati Airee (four) remained unbeaten. Sony Pakhrin and Suman Khatiwada took two wickets each for Bagmati, while skipper Asmina Karmacharya claimed one.
Earlier, skipper Asmina Karmacharya top scored for Bagmati with 19 not out, while Suman Khatiwada scored 19. Other Bagmati batters failed to score in double figures. Rekha Rawal, player-of-the-match Nary Thapa and Indu Barma took one wicket each for APF, while four Bagmati batters were run out.
In another match, Gandaki scored 59-5 in their allotted 20 overs before Sudurpashchim raced to the target losing four wickets with 58 balls to spare. Gandaki skipper Shristi Jaishi scored an unbeaten 28, while other batters could not reach double figure mark.
Ritu Kanoujiya took two wickets for Sudurpashchim, while Sneha Mahara and SabitriDhami grabbed one each.
In reply, player-of-the-match Ritu Kanoujiya top scored for Sudurpashchim with 22 runs, while Sheha Mahara remained unbeaten on 21. Shila Chhetry took two wickets, while Shristi Jaishi grabbed one for Gandaki. Sudurpashchim had faced an eight-wicket defeat at the hands of Bagmati in the first match.
Handball
Gandaki Province, Karnali Province and Province-I recorded wins in handball at Pokhara Multipurpose Covered Hall.
In women's section matches, Yogita Gurung netted seven goals as Gandaki defeated Sudurpashchim Province 27-4, while Karnali beat Madhesh Province 11-7 riding on five goals each from Anjali Shahi and Sangita Singh. Also, Prekshya Katuwal scored eight goals to guide Province-I to a 24-8 victory over Bagmati.
In men's section, Bagmati and Lumbini registered victories. Sonam Rakesh Sherpa netted five goals as Bagmati defeated Madhesh Province 21-13, while Lumbini recorded a 29-24 win against Province-I riding on 15 goals from Sharan Thapa.
NSC, RBB ink deal
The National Sports Council and Rastriya Banijya Bank reached an agreement to sponsor the ninth National Games, slated for October 14-20 inGandaki Province. NSC Member Secretary Tanka Lal Ghising and RBB Managing Director Kiran Kumar Shrestha signed the memorandum of understanding on Tuesday.
As per the agreement, the RBB - government owned largest commercial bank of the country - will provide the NSC with three million rupees to organise the Games. In return, the RBB will be allowed to use their advertisement banners and hoarding boards at Games venues, while the NSC will invite RBB officials as chief guests at closing ceremonies of different events of the Games. The two parties also agreed to sponsor events organised by the NSC in future.
