Man accused of niece’s murder held after 20 years

A man on the run for 20 years after allegedly killing his niece was arrested from Sundarpur Chauharwa, Rautahat on Thursday.

The arrested is Jamahir Mahato, 55. Police investigation showed that Mahato was making a living by pulling a pushcart.

Mahato had allegedly opened fire on his wife Dipika Devi over a minor domestic dispute. But, the bullet accidentally had hit his niece Sabita Kumari,3, some two decadres ago ago. Sabita reportedly died on the spot.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Nabin Krishna Bhandari said police arrested Mahato with support from a team from District Police Office, Sarlahi.

Jamahir was hiding in India for many years after the incident. But, of late, he had started living in Sundarpur Chauharwa thinking that the administration and police had forgotten the incident that occured 20 years ago.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Bhandari said that Mahato was remanded to 25 day in police custody and investigation had been launched to establish his involvement in the murder of his niece.

Meanwhile, Rautahat police have arrested more than 21 fugitives involved in different criminal activities in the last two months.

Over 500 people accused of various crimes are still at large, accoriding to District Poilice Office, Rautahat.
