TBSS pays tribute to Gen Z movement martyrs, calls for probe into vandalism and other public property damage

KATHMANDU, SEPTEMBER 15

The Tamu (Gurung) Bouddha Sewa Samit (TBSS) has expressed deep concern over the recent attack on Bhat-Bhateni Supermarket, Nepal's largest retail chain, during the Generation Z protests on September 8–9.

In a statement, the Gurung community organization offered heartfelt tribute to those killed during the demonstrations against corruption and misgovernance, and wished a speedy recovery to the injured. TBSS said infiltration of the protests led to "unprecedented vandalism" at Bhat-Bhateni, causing heavy loss of life and property, and noted that the chain has repeatedly been targeted in similar incidents.

The group highlighted Bhat-Bhateni's contribution to Nepal's economy, employing about 22,000 people and operating 27 outlets nationwide. It also cited the philanthropic work of the chain's founder, Min Bahadur Gurung, including the establishment of a 72-bed emergency ward at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital and scholarships for students from remote areas to study medicine.

Despite repeated attacks, the supermarket has continued operating. TBSS has urged an immediate investigation into the assault on Bhat-Bhateni as well as other incidents of vandalism targeting media houses, the Parliament, Singha Durbar, and the Supreme Court, and called for legal action against those responsible.
