KATHMANDU, SEPTEMBER 9
The United Nations in Nepal has expressed grave concern over the tragic loss of lives and escalating violence during the ongoing Gen Z-led protests, calling on all sides to exercise restraint and seek dialogue.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the UN said it was "deeply pained" by the growing tensions and extended condolences to the families of those killed, while wishing a speedy recovery for the injured.
The UN emphasized that freedom of expression, access to information, and peaceful assembly are fundamental rights guaranteed under both Nepali and international law. It urged protesters to demonstrate peacefully and avoid violence, while also calling on authorities to ensure that law enforcement responses remain proportionate and consistent with international human rights standards.
"All allegations of excessive use of force should be investigated promptly in an independent, transparent and impartial manner," the statement said.
Acknowledging the frustrations voiced by Nepal's young population, the UN stressed that dialogue remains the best means to resolve grievances. "The voices of young Nepalis have been heard loud and clear, and Nepal will benefit from taking concrete steps to address the root causes of the issues raised and ensuring a prosperous future for young Nepalis," it noted.
The United Nations further reiterated its readiness to support dialogue and trust-building initiatives that could help de-escalate tensions and contribute to a peaceful resolution for a more prosperous Nepal.
