KATHMANDU, SEPTEMBER 20
Lal Mohammad, 55, who was shot multiple times outside his house in Gothatar, in Kageswori Municipality yesterday, had a checkered past, say police.
Mohammad had earlier served a 10-year sentence for killing a businessman Balaram Patuwa of Bara district, in 2007, in Kathmandu. One of the five accused Mohammad, who were sentenced to life imprisonment, was released under presidential amnesty around five years ago.
During the investigation of the murder, police had back then found that Mohammad had another citizenship certificate under another name. Police said Mohammad dealt with counterfeit currency and had links with Indian underworld.
Mohammad, a permanent resident of Godaita Municipality, of Sarlahi, was shot dead in front of his house a motor-cycle-borne person. The CCTV footage shows that Mohammad, even after being shot several times, is seen running around his car to save his life. The shooters were chased by Mohammad's daughter, who jumped from the first floor of her house, in bid to save her father. But, Mohammad who was shot in head, chest and thigh succumbed to the injuries in the Maharajgunj-based TU's Teaching Hospital.
No one has been arrested in the case even though police said they had sealed all the checkpoints within an hour of the incident and all police units were kept on high alert.
Mohammad was attacked around a fortnight ago in the same area on that day, he had fought back and his attackers had fled.
Next day he had gone to a nearby police station to file a complaint. He had even sought security from police, but police did not take the matter seriously.
