KATHMANDU, SEPTEMBER 6

A research capacity building training on 'Data Analysis and Scientific Paper Writing' organised by Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu, started from Monday. The training is part of the collaborative research project supported by ANSO, China, and jointly organised by the Central Department of Geography TU, and Kathmandu Centre for Research and Education (KCRE)- CAS-TU.

Prof Dharma Kanta Banskota, vice-chancellor of Tribhuvan University inaugurated the training programme yesterday. Wang Xin, consular from Chinese embassy, Prof Cao Jinhua, executive director, ANSO, Prof Shiva Lal Bhusal, rector, Tribhuvan University, and Prof Tao Wang, executive director, KCRE-CAS-TU attended the programme as special guests. Similarly, Prof Kushum Shakya, dean, Faculty of Humanities and Social Science, TU and Prof Binil Aryal, dean, Institute of Science and Technology, TU, were other guests of the programme. It was also attended by directors, department heads, professors and researchers.

The training is part of the ongoing collaborative research funded by Alliance of International Science Organisation.

The South Asian region is a climate sensitive region that is experiencing increasing impacts of climate change especially in the agriculture sector. There is urgency to carry out detailed study for evidence based policy to combat climate change impact, for which TU needs to enhance the research capacity of university faculties.

There are 27 training participants from three universities, namely Tribhuvan University, Open University and Far-Western University. This training is expected to provide knowledge and practical skills in data analysis and scientific paper writing that will contribute to career development of researchers and enhance knowledge production in respective research fields.

ANSO Executive Director Prof Cao Jinhua expressed satisfaction with the wise utilisation of fund/resource on research activities. He underscored the global issue of climate change and its impacts and stated the achievement of ANSO within 5 years of establishment.

Prof Tao Wang, executive director, KCRE-CAS-TU highlighted the importance of the training and shared that university departments can benefit from KCRE by organising research and capacity development activities.

Wang Xin, the consular of the Chinese Embassy stated that China had made significant progress in science and technology research. He stressed that China would like to increase cooperation in academic and development sectors in Nepal.

Prof Dharma Kanta Baskota, vice-chancellor, stressed the importance of research capacity development for enhancing research-based education. He thanked the research team and highlighted the importance of study of households' adaptive capacity towards climate change for devising appropriate climate change policy at different levels. He also acknowledged ANSO and CAS for their collaboration with TU.

Chairman of the programme, Prof Umesh Kumar Mandal, head of the department, expressed hope that the academic activities of the department would be enhanced. He said it was an opportunity for networking and collaboration among young researchers from different universities of Nepal.
