DHARAN, JUNE 30

Agitating students, doctors, and employees today padlocked the offices of all four office bearers of BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, Dharan, demanding their resignation.

Students and doctors have been agitating for the last two weeks against irregularities at BPKIHS. After talks with the office bearers ended inconclusively yesterday, agitators have made resignation of the office bearers their bottomline for talks.

They accused Vice-chancellor Dr Gyanendra Giri of showing uncommon demeanour in yesterday's talks and rector and director of being irresponsible towards their demands.

Agitators have charged that irregularities and mismanagement have escalated at BPKIHS due to VC Dr Giri, Rector Dr Guru Prasad Khanal, Registrar Dr Mohan Chandra Regmi and Hospital Director Gauri Shankar Sah.

The Joint Struggle Committee Co-coordinator Dr Bishnu Pokhrel said that they would not hold talks with the incumbent office bearers. "All the four office bearers have to put in their papers and the chancellor will have to form a new talks team. We shall hold talks only with that team," said Dr Pokhrel. Dr Pokhrel warned of picketing the prime minister and chancellor's Office in Kathmandu if their demands were not met within a week.

Junior Resident Welfare Society's Chair Rajendra Ghimire accused office bearers of colluding with businessmen to buy low quality medical equipment and tools at BPKIHS for commission.

"Resignation of the four office bearers is the bottomline for talks," Ghimire said. They have demanded the appointment of VC, rector, registrar and director on the basis of meritocracy.
