The government has announced plans to blacktop 1,000 kilometres of roads and construct over 200 road bridges in the upcoming fiscal year.

Presenting the budget for FY 2083/84, Finance Minister Dr Swarnim Wagle said the infrastructure targets also include expansion and upgrading of key national highways.

The government has allocated Rs 37.46 billion for upgrading the East–West Highway into a four-lane roadway within five years. Works on the Narayanghat–Butwal and Kamala–Kanchanpur sections are expected to be completed this year, while around 80 kilometres of construction will be finished within the next two years.

For the Fast Track project, Rs 17.64 billion has been allocated, which includes construction of 40 bridges and four tunnels. The Postal Highway has been allocated Rs 4.65 billion, while Rs 1 billion has been set aside for the Karnali Highway and Rs 2.16 billion for the Mid-Hill Highway.

The government has set an overall target of expanding and upgrading the national road network as part of its infrastructure development agenda.
