KATHMANDU, FEBRUARY 24

The Government of Japan has handed over a newly built classroom building to Shree Chandrawati Secondary School (SCSS) in Lekhani Rural Municipality, Udayapur, today.

The handover ceremony, held on February 24, was attended by Maeda Toru, Ambassador of Japan to Nepal. The project, implemented under Japan's Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP), provided funding of USD 65,298 (approximately Rs 8.5 million) for the construction of new classrooms at SCSS.

During the event, Ambassador Maeda congratulated all those involved and emphasized the project's significant impact on improving learning conditions for both students and teachers.

Established in 1960, SCSS currently enrolls around 330 students and plays a crucial role in the local education sector. However, before the project's completion, the school's previous 35-year-old facilities were deteriorating, lacked earthquake resistance, and faced classroom shortages and sanitation issues. The new infrastructure includes two one-story buildings-one with two classrooms and the other with three classrooms, along with separate, well-equipped toilets for girls and boys, according to the press release issued by the Japan Embassy in Kathmandu.

The Embassy of Japan hopes the new classrooms will serve as a symbol of friendship between Japan and Nepal while setting an example for enhancing quality education and living conditions, the release further states.

This initiative was carried out by the NPO Kids of Kathmandu through GGP, an organization that has been actively working since 2015 to improve educational environment in Nepal. Since 1991, more than 200 GGP projects have been implemented across Nepal, directly benefiting local communities in their socio-economic development.
