20 Nepal Police DIGs transferred en masse

KATHMANDU: As many as 20 Deputy Inspectors General (DIGs), including Prakash Aryal and Bam Bahadur Bhandari who were among the four contenders for the post of Nepal Police's chief, have been transferred en masse.

The Nepal Police headquarters said on Wednesday that the transfer was made by the Home Ministry on Monday, February 20, prior to a Cabinet meeting that decided to hold local elections on May 14.

The decision did not touch the Narcotics Control Bureau, headed by Jaya Bahadur Chand who was nominated the Nepal Police chief by the government on February 12,  and the Central Investigation Bureau, headed by Nawa Raj Silwal, who challenged Chand's appointment.

With a double promotion , the government on February 12 had named DIG Chand the Nepal Police's Inspector General. Challenging the decision, DIG Silwal moved the Supreme, which subsequently issued an interim order to stay the appointment.

Since the incumbent chief, Upendra Kant Aryal,  was retiring due to his 30-year service, the government on February 13 amended the Nepal Police Regulation and appointed AIG Dr Dinesh Chandra Pokhrel, who is from technical stream, the security force's acting chief.

DIG Aryal has been transferred to the Crime Investigation Division at the police headquarters. He was earlier posted at the MPCO Traffic Division. DIG Bhandari has been sent to the Ranipokhari-based Metropolitan Police Office from the headquarters' special bureau.
