KATHMANDU, DECEMBER 15
Top Nepali amateur golfer Subash Tamang advanced to the last 16 of the IGU 121st Amateur Golf Championship of India at the Bombay Presidency Golf Club in Mumbai today.
Tamang defeated 22-nd ranked Sanju 2&1 in the first round of the Match Play. Tamang, who made it to the Match Play after he finished 11th in the 36-hole competition played under stroke play format, will now face Shaurya Bhattacharya.
The sixth-ranked Bhattacharya beat Anshul Kabthiyal 4&2.
The 13th South Asian Games double gold medallist, Tamang won first hole but Sanju levelled the scores by winning the second.
Tamang took four-hole lead after he won fourth, seventh, ninth and 11th holes. But the Indian golfer hit back winning three straight holes from the 14th to reduce the deficit to one. Under pressure after losing three consecutive holes, Tamang sealed the 2&1 victory with a win on the penultimate hole.
Also making it to the pre-quarters were Karan Verma, Harimohan Singh, Shaurya Sharma, Vibhu Tyagi, Shaurya Binu, Mandaar Prashar, Sandeep Yadav, Jaiveer, Vinamra Anand, Rohit, Manjot Singh, Mohd Wasil, Yuvraj Singh and Sawai HS Bhati. The round of 16 and quarter-final matches are slated for Friday, while the semi-finals are on Saturday.
The 36-hole final will be played on Sunday.
Out of the 53 golfers, including two from Nepal, who took part in the most prestigious amateur golf tournament of India, top 32 in the 36-hole competition qualified for the Match Play. Another Nepali player Sadbhav Acharya failed to make the cut.
