Top Nepali golfer Subash Tamang earned berth in the Match Play under the IGU 121st Amateur Golf Championship of India, while Sadbhav Acharya missed the cut at the par-70 Bombay Presidency Golf Club in Mumbai today.
Tamang carded even-par 70 in the second round for the 36-hole total of one-over 141 and he shared the 10th position with three other golfers. Tamang, who was placed 11th in the final standing, will now face Sanju from Chandigarh, who finished 22nd with the total score of four-over 144.
Starting the second day from the 10th tee, Tamang carded two-under 33 on his front nine before playing two-over 37 on the latter half. He took the turn after carding birdies on the 16th and 18th holes.
He then faced three bogeys on the third, eighth and ninth against a lone birdie on the fourth hole.
Another Nepali golfer, Acharya did not fare well as he slumped to eight-over 78 and exited the tournament with the 36-hole total of 10-over 151. Among 53 participants, Acharya shared the 43rd position.
He had a disastrous front nine of 10-over 45 and made a strong come back with two-under 33 on the back nine but it was too late for him to earn a berth in the next round.
In a lacklustre back nine, Acharya faced four bogeys on the 10th, 12th, 14th and 18th holes apart from a double bogey on the 13th and a double-par eight on the 15th hole. He bounced back strongly on the back nine with birdies on the first, fifth and seventh and an eagle on the fourth hole but he dropped a shot on the eighth and faced a double bogey on the ninth hole.
Karan Verma of West Bengal finished at the top with 36-hole total of five-under 135 after he carded five-under 65 in the second round.
Vinamra Anand of Uttar Pradesh (69) came second at four-under 136, while Punjab's Yuvraj Singh (68) and overnight leader Shaurya Banu (71) of Karnataka shared the third position at 137.
Aryan Roopa Anand (67) and Shaurya Bhattacharya (71) were tied for fifth at two-under 138. After 36-hole competition which was played under stroke play format, top 32 players qualified for Match Play. The first round matches will be played on Thursday, while pre-quarter and quarter-final matches are slated for Friday. The semi-finals will be played on Friday, while the 36-hole final is slated for Saturday.
